Flickr Mushroom Coffee Is Here And This Is Why People Say It’s The Next ‘Superfood’
Folks will try just about anything these days if you tell them it’s healthy — even if it means adding fungus to a perfectly good cup of coffee. Instagram’s newest favorite food is apparently mushroom coffee, which is exactly what it sounds like.
Well, sort of.
Company Four Sigmatic is making a mix. Instead of being just mushroom-infused liquid, it’s really mushroom extract added to Central American Arabica beans, so it’s kind of like tossing some dried mushroom bits into your coffee.
One Instagram user said it’s great if you add cacao powder, coconut oil and grass-fed butter, which seems a little more complicated than, I don’t know, just having a cup of coffee.
Four Sigmatic claims mushroom coffee is super good for your health and all that. Tero Isokauppila, president of the company, says mushroom coffee is the “world’s healthiest coffee.”
This is a very high claim to make.
Because, you see, regular coffee is already very healthy. In fact, there’s really not many problems with it unless you drink way too much or drink too late in the day so it messes up your sleep schedule.
Regular coffee has been linked to lowered risk of cardiovascular disease, strokes, heart failure, liver cancer, cirrhosis, Parkinson’s disease, Type 2 diabetes and just death in general.
But if you’re really concerned about your health because of your coffee intake, I guess you can try mushroom coffee.
It’s not like mushrooms are particularly bad for you, so there’s no real health detriment I can think of about replacing your regular coffee with mushroom coffee, if that’s the kind of thing you’re into.
Although if you’re into the health benefits of mushrooms, you could just add them to things that already are good with mushrooms, like a delicious risotto or veal marsala.
